Lexus launches the RX 400h SR
This summer the Lexus range is being extended to include a new version, the RX 400h SR, that offers a typically high Lexus specification with great options for multimedia and entertainment systems. The Lexus RX 400h was the pioneer of hybrid power in the premium SUV market and since its launch two years ago has enjoyed strong popularity, accounting for almost two thirds of all RX sales during 2006. The RX 400h SR, on sale now, is positioned in the line-up between the standard RX 400h and the RX 400h SE. It builds on the regular RX specification with leather upholstery, eight-way electric front seat adjustment, heated front seats, a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat and metallic paint. And, of course, it comes with the higher performance, high fuel efficiency and lower emissions benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive, accelerating from rest to 62mph in 7.6 seconds, returning 34.9mpg in combined cycle driving and emitting 192g/km of carbon dioxide.

The Lexus Multimedia system is available as an option, a package that comprises DVD satellite navigation with dynamic route guidance, voice command control of key audio, navigation and communication functions, Bluetooth connectivity, an 11-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system with six-disc DVD autochanger and digital MP3/WMA file recognition, Park Assist Monitor and an Electro Multi-Vision VCA screen.

An in-car entertainment (ICE) package is also available, with twin headrest mounted screens and infra-red headphones for rear seat passengers to enjoy movies or computer games on the move.

The RX 400h SR is available in Platinum Ice or Astral Black metallic finish, with grey or black leather interior. The model has a class-leading 16E insurance group, with on-the-road prices starting at £37,500.
Lexus announces prices for new LS 600h
The LS 600h, the new hybrid power flagship of the Lexus brand, will cost from £81,400 when the model goes on sale in the UK on 1 October. Equipped with a more advanced powertrain and more sophisticated array of preventive, active and passive features than any car in its class, the LS 600h will set new standards in luxury motoring. A superb specification will ensure owners enjoy supreme comfort, convenience and on-board entertainment.

The LS 600h features the world's first full-time, all-wheel drive full hybrid V8 powertrain, combining a technically peerless 5.0-litre engine with a powerful, high-output motor. The result is performance that rivals a standard V12 petrol engine (nought to 62mph in 6.3 seconds) with fuel consumption and emissions that are on a par with the segment's best performing - and substantially lower powered - diesels (30.4mpg and 219g/km in combined cycle driving). Thanks to the Lexus Hybrid Drive system's compact but powerful electric motor, maximum torque is delivered from zero rpm, giving the car exceptional performance off the line.

Two versions will be available in the UK: the LS 600h and LS 600h L long wheelbase model. Both benefit from an exceptional specification that includes pre-crash safety systems that can detect collision hazards both on the road ahead and from the rear, permanent four-wheel drive, Adaptive Variable Suspension and the world's first application of LED technology for low beam headlight illumination. Advanced technologies are dovetailed with the skills of master craftsmen to achieve a high luxury finish in the paintwork, fine leather upholstery, hand-trimmed dashboard and real wood cabin trim features.

The in-car entertainment package includes a 19-speaker Mark Levinson premium hi-fi with six-disc DVD autochanger and a nine-inch ceiling-mounted screen for rear seat passengers.

The LS 600h L can be additionally specified with a Rear Seat Relaxation Pack that provides even higher levels of comfort. Lexus at the Geneva Motor Show
Lexus is presenting the European premiere of its new F-marque at the Geneva motor show, with the new IS-F sports saloon and LF-A supercar concept taking centre stage.

The Lexus F designation identifies vehicles specifically designed and engineered for ultra-high performance and exceptional sports driving dynamics. F-badged models further emphasise Lexus's pursuit of perfection and its aim to continuously push the limits of automobile engineering.

The IS-F is powered by a sports-tuned 5.0-litre V8 that delivers more than 400 DIN hp and 500 Nm of torque. Acceleration from rest to 62mph takes 4.9 seconds and top speed is a governed 168mph. Carbon dioxide emissions of 290g/km position the IS-F as one of the cleanest sports saloons in its class, as well as one of the most powerful.

The transmission is based on Lexus's world-first eight-speed automatic, which made its debut last year in the new LS 460. It is specially tuned for the IS-F with a new sports shift control that lets the driver choose a manual mode, using paddle shifts on the steering wheel, or fully automatic gear selection. The sports shift control gives the transmission the quickest up-shifting in the segment at 100 milliseconds (compared to 50ms for Formula 1 cars).

In keeping with its sporting character, the IS-F is the first Lexus to feature switchable VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management). This lets the driver select Normal, Sport or Off settings according to preference.

The Lexus LF-A is the result of Lexus's sports engineering team's success in developing a new and practical approach to design engineering for a more compact and energy-efficient supercar concept.

With an overall length of 4,400mm, it is the most compact, yet most powerful Lexus to date. The racing-inspired 5.0-litre V10 engine generates more than 500 DIN hp, giving the LF-A a top speed approaching 200mph. The forward/mid-engine location, with rear-mounted transaxle and radiators gives the car perfect front/rear weight distribution and superb handling precision.

Both the IS-F and the LF-A demonstrate the advances Lexus has made in perfecting the base technologies that shape its cars' performance characteristics. The LS 600h shows how these can be even further refined to deliver power with supreme efficiency, setting new standards in environmentally-conscious performance in the premium segment.

The new LS 600h is the highest expression of current automobile technology. Its 5.0-litre V8 uses Lexus's D-4S technology, with two fuel injectors per cylinder and VVTi-E intelligent valve timing on the intake to boost performance and reduce emissions, noise and vibration.

These characteristics are further refined by Lexus's hybrid system. This combination, together with a unique, electrically-controlled continuously variable transmission, delivers performance typical of a normally-aspirated V12. At the same time, combined fuel consumption is 29.7mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are 220g/km, figures which compare well with the levels achieved by the cleanest diesels in the segment.

The dual-stage, CVT gives the LS 600h smooth, linear power delivery and seamless acceleration. It is matched to the all-wheel drivetrain with a central mechanical Torsen limited slip differential to give excellent handling stability in high performance driving.

In addition, Lexus will present its first long wheelbase model, the LS 600h L, offering unprecedented entertainment and relaxation features for rear seat passengers, including a reclining seat with leg and footrest.

Equipment comparisons between the RX 350 and the RX 350 Limited Edition are detailed in the table below.

Further value is provided by the Limited Edition's class-leading 16E insurance group.

The RX 350 Limited Edition is available in Platinum Ice, Aleutian Grey and Brechin Slate metallic paint finishes with a choice of Oakham Ivory or Pembroke Black leather interiors. Power is from Lexus's 272bhp (276 DIN hp) 3.5-litre V6 Dual VVT-i petrol engine, which gives nought to 62mph acceleration in 7.8 seconds and 25.2mpg combined cycle fuel consumption.
Launch of Lexus flagship at Paris Motor Show
In creating the LS 600h, Lexus set out to create a car that delivers the highest standards of performance, design, safety and efficiency. Combining these qualities usually demands a degree of compromise, for example, more power means higher fuel consumption, but thanks to the innovative engineering and advanced hybrid power technology deployed by Lexus, the LS 600h defines new standards in the luxury segment.

The LS 600h is the third production model to use Lexus Hybrid Drive, following the successful launch of the
RX 400h and GS 450h. It uses a new, longitudinally-mounted 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, developed from the 4.6-litre unit featured in the new LS 460, combined with a high-output electric motor and a newly-designed, large capacity battery pack.

Power output from the system is more than 443bhp (449 DIN hp), yet combined fuel consumption is almost 30mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are less than 220g/km.

The new V8 engine features two injectors per cylinder which achieves significant improvements in torque, fuel economy and emissions. It is also equipped with Lexus's dual VVT-i variable intake and exhaust valve timing system, incorporating VVT-iE, the world's first electric motor-driven intake camshaft, which operates at all engine speeds and temperatures.

To harness the immense power generated, the LS 600h has a new mechanical all-wheel drive system for improved traction and stability and a dual-stage, electronically controlled continuously variable transmission
(E-CVT) for smooth, linear power delivery.

When driving in low engine efficiency conditions, such as when starting up and at low to mid-range speeds, the
LS 600h runs on its electric motors alone, eradicating both engine noise and CO2 emissions. In normal driving, the V8 engine is the principal power source. During deceleration and under braking, the combustion engine switches off and kinetic energy from the braking is recovered as electrical energy to recharge the battery.

The Lexus LS 600h offers the highest content of sophisticated preventive safety technology in the world, supported by a series of advanced driver assistance features.

The Pre-Crash Safety system, already featured in the IS and GS model ranges, has been developed to provide even better performance, both in daylight and at night. Its features include an Advanced Obstacle Detection System, which uses a millimetre-wave radar and infra-red stereo camera to detect a wide range of obstacles on the road ahead including, for the first time, pedestrians.

The Driver Monitoring System uses a camera mounted on the top of the steering column cover and a series of integrated near-infra-red LEDs to track the movement of the driver's head. If it determines the driver is looking away from the road ahead at the same time as a collision threat is detected, the system will sound an alert and briefly apply the brakes.

Completing the raft of new preventive safety technologies is the Rear Pre-Crash Safety system, which can detect an imminent rear-end impact, both when the car is moving or stationary. To help protect against whiplash injury, the front seat head restraints are automatically moved up and forwards to cushion the occupant's head.

The long wheelbase LS 600h L measures 5,150mm, its additional 120mm in the wheelbase dedicated entirely to providing extra rear passenger legroom.

As well as being more spacious, the LS 600h L offers first class comfort, with reclining heated and air conditioned rear seats with leg and foot rests and a unique massage function with different programmes to provide gentle or firm treatment for the back and shoulders.

It also features the world's first multi-zone automatic climate control air conditioning system that monitors and reacts to human body temperature. A rear seat entertainment system with a separate DVD player and retractable ceiling mounted screen is available, together with a Mark Levinson Reference Surround System with 5.1 home theatre sound reproduction.
European premiere for the Lexus LS 600h
LEXUS LS 600h and LS 600h L

The LS 600h combines a 5.0-litre V8 engine with a hybrid powertrain - hence the 'h' suffix - enabling it to comfortably match the performance of even larger capacity normally-aspirated V12 engines. It will make its European debut on the Lexus stand at the Paris Motor Show on 28 September, presented both in standard and long-wheelbase form. The LS 600h L is 12cm longer overall, providing passengers with even more space and additional comfort features, such as reclining rear seats with built-in massage functions and air conditioning that is controlled according to the body temperature of the people on board.

Lexus Hybrid Drive

The Lexus Hybrid Drive in the LS 600h has a power output of 444bhp (450 DIN hp/330kW), delivers segment-beating fuel consumption of 29.7mpg (combined cycle) and carbon dioxide emissions below 220g/km. The new all-wheel drive system works in tandem with a newly-developed dual-stage, electronically controlled, continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), giving the car excellent linear acceleration capability.

The new LS 600h will be joined on Lexus's show stand by its hybrid siblings, the RX 400h and the GS 450h, both of which have set new standards in environmentally-conscious performance in the luxury car market.

The RX 400h has revolutionised the premium SUV segment with its unique combination of a high performance, frugal fuel consumption (34.9mpg combined cycle) and CO2 emissions (192g/km) that are up to 30 per cent lower than those of its direct competitors.

The GS 450h is the world's first hybrid power performance saloon, with genuine sports driving dynamics from its classic front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. Its 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine is the first in its segment to feature dual fuel injection (port and direct injection), increasing both efficiency and performance. As a result, the GS 450h returns 35.8mpg in combined cycle driving and CO2 emissions of 186g/km, lower than for any competitor in its segment.

These new hybrid models have contributed to growth in Lexus sales throughout Europe: the forecast for 2006 is for a 66 per cent increase to 48,000 units.

Further details of the new LS 600h and LS 600h L will be revealed during the Lexus press conference at the Paris Motor Show, scheduled for 5pm on Thursday, 28 September in Hall 4.
The new Lexus GS 450h
The new Lexus GS 450h introduces hybrid power to the premium executive saloon market, a car that delivers exceptional performance to rival its conventional V8 competition, together with fuel economy and low emissions levels that yield equally powerful cost of ownership benefits.

Using the latest development of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system, the GS 450h follows the RX 400h luxury SUV in giving drivers a technically advanced but thoroughly practical and rational alternative to the high power petrol and diesel models that dominate the premium segment.

LEXUS HYBRID DRIVE

The GS 450h has a completely new, front engine, rear-wheel drive, series/parallel hybrid powertrain. It uses a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a new D-4S (Direct-injection 4-stroke Superior-version) twin injector system with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent), developing 292bhp (296 DIN hp) and 368Nm of torque, mated to a compact, high-output, permanent magnet electric motor that generates 197bhp (200 DIN hp) and 275Nm of torque right from standstill.

With a combined power output of 341bhp (345 DIN hp), the GS 450h is not only the world's most powerful production hybrid car, but also the first to achieve the 100 DIN hp per litre benchmark.

Another world-first is the GS 450h's Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission - E-CVT - with sequential shift mode. Each of the six sequential 'steps' gives sharper engine braking force, in the manner of a conventional automatic gearbox in sequential mode.

The GS 450h can accelerate from nought to 62mph in 5.9 seconds and from 50 to 75mph in 4.9 seconds, maintaining linear acceleration all the way on to a top speed of 155mph, with none of the typical 'jumps' between gears experienced in a conventional drivetrain.

At the same time, the GS 450h returns 35.8mpg in combined cycle driving, fuel consumption that is on a par with C-segment petrol cars. Carbon dioxide emissions are 186g/km, which matches the performance of four-cylinder economy diesels in the premium segment, and combined emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons (HC) are lower than for any other vehicle powered by a combustion engine at 0.01g/km.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

The new GS 450h has ideal 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and also a better moment of inertia compared to the GS 430 model, as the 3.5-litre V6 is 17 per cent lighter than the 4.3-litre V8. These aspects contribute to the car's more dynamic, agile handling.

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) incorporates Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), which alters the steering gear ratio according to vehicle speed. This gives minimal steering effort at low speeds, with improved feel and feedback as speed increases. The VGRS system is linked to the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and Lexus's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, helping maintain stability and increasing driver enjoyment up the limit of the car's performance capabilities.

The front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension design includes an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, offering Sport and Comfort settings. Sport mode increases the difference between inner and outer shock absorber damping through corners to help reduce body roll.

SAFETY

SE-L versions of the GS 450h feature Lexus's Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system, which primes the front seatbelts and emergency braking when an unavoidable frontal collision is detected. This works in tandem with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically matches the speed of the GS 450h to that of the vehicle ahead, maintaining a safe distance.

The GS 450h is also equipped with the latest generation of Lexus's Vehicle Integrated Dynamics Management (VDIM), which co-ordinates the ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with the Active Variable Suspension (AVS), Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) to improve vehicle stability and handling, up to its performance limits.

The passive safety package includes a class-leading complement of front, knee, side and curtain airbags, augmented on SE and SE-L versions by additional rear side airbags.

DESIGN AND REFINEMENT

The GS 450h can be identified as the high performance flagship of the GS range by its 'Hybrid' badging to the rear of the sills and bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels. SE and SE-L models are equipped with a discreet bootlid spoiler.

Inside the cabin, the GS 450h benefits from the same attention to detail applied to the other models in the GS range, with the design and operation of controls and features with optimum ease and refinement.

CONVENIENCE AND ENTERTAINMENT

The GS 450h is equipped with a comprehensive range of technologically advanced equipment, designed both to simplify and enhance life on board. These include Smart Key access, sequenced interior lighting as driver or passengers enter or leave the vehicle, push-button engine start-up and steering-sensitive parking sensors.

It also features the only fully electric climate control air conditioning system in its segment, reducing the impact on fuel economy and performance compared to conventional systems.

In the cabin, the instrument panel remains clearly visible in all light conditions, thanks to the new Electronic Chromatic Device (ECD). This uses a light sensor in the high-mounted stop light to gauge the ambient light level and adjust the brightness of the Optitron instrument dials accordingly.

SE and SE-L models are fitted as standard with the new Lexus Multimedia and Navigation package. This includes a 14-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround System with six-disc DVD autochanger, Bluetooth connectivity and the Lexus Parking Assist Monitor.

The latest generation Lexus Navigation System delivers faster route calculation and clearer graphics, using enhanced display technology via a seven-inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) touch-screen. Voice commands can be used to control navigation, audio, air conditioning and hands-free telephone functions.

LEXUS GS 450h AND THE UK MARKET

In the UK, the launch of the new GS range in April 2005 revitalised the range, with year-end sales figures up by almost 700 per cent to 1,820 units. For the remainder of 2006 Lexus expects to sell 700 GS 450h models, accounting for 30 per cent of all GS sales. In 2007 the annual total is expected to rise to 750 units.
Lexus GS 450h tames the taxman
Traditionally there is a high price to be paid by any motorist who seeks performance, prestige and luxury from his or her company car, not just in terms of the purchase cost, but also in the year-on-year tax burden. The launch of the new hybrid power Lexus GS 450h next month promises to shake up the premium executive segment with tax rates that will save drivers thousands of pounds each year compared to the bills incurred by competitor models.

More than that, the performance capabilities of the Lexus are a match for rival V8-powered vehicles, while exhaust emissions and fuel economy steal a march on the market's leading diesels. And thanks to peerless equipment specifications, BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz drivers would need to spend even more money to match the levels delivered as standard by the Lexus.

The key factors which make the financial argument for the GS 450h so strong are the low carbon dioxide emissions from the hybrid powertrain and the exceptional value its list price represents.

Emitting 186g/km of carbon dioxide, the GS 450h SE incurs a benefit-in-kind rate for company car tax of 21 per cent. With a list price of £43,920, that produces an annual tax bill of £3,672.

Owners of the BMW 550i SE, Audi A6 4.2 quattro and Mercedes-Benz E500 pay the penalty for their vehicles' higher emissions and higher list price: consequently tax bills are between £2,469 and £2,641 a year more than for the Lexus. And there is little comfort for owners of premium diesel models either: the Audi A6 3.0 TDi quattro attracts a top-line 35 per cent rating and the BMW 535d SE 32 per cent.

The GS 450h's hybrid powertrain combines a conventional direct-injection 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a powerful electric motor, which together produce a maximum of 335bhp. Aided by an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT), the car will move from rest to 62mph in less than six seconds, with rear-wheel drive and a 50:50 front-to-rear weight balance for truly sporting handling. The GS 450h range is launched on
19 May with prices starting at £38,015.
Lexus at 2006 Geneva Motor Show
LS 460 - European Premiere

Arriving at European showrooms towards the end of 2006, the fourth generation of the marque's flagship, the Lexus LS 460, features an all-new 4.6-litre engine generating around 375bhp. In addition to power, the LS offers one of the most economical petrol V8s on the market, returning 26.2mpg in the combined cycle (preliminary figures). For quick yet smooth acceleration, the V8 is mated to the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, fully exploiting the car's performance potential.

Premiering at the Geneva Motor show with several world and segment firsts in the area of safety, the all-new LS 460 sets new standards in the protection of both occupants and pedestrians. Further details will be announced during the on-stand press conference.

GS 450h - The world's first hybrid luxury sedan

On sale throughout Europe from early summer 2006, the GS 450h features a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine coupled to a high-output, permanent magnet electric motor. Combined power output is in excess of 335bhp accelerating the new GS 450h seamlessly from 0-62mph in less than 6.0 seconds.

The new powertrain, the first rear-wheel drive hybrid, equips the GS 450h with performance characteristics equivalent to conventional 4.5-litre V8 engined models with fuel consumption on a par with that of a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engined vehicle.

Proving to be substantially more frugal than comparable sports saloons, the GS 450h is returning 35.8mpg in the combined cycle; moreover, the new Lexus returns CO2 emissions of just 186g/km, markedly less than rival, premium sector saloons with similar engine power.

RX 350 - European Premiere

On sale throughout Europe in April, the Lexus RX 350 further refines driving pleasure through the class-leading performance of a new 3.5-litre V6 petrol powerplant. Equipped with an ultra-smooth, 5-speed automatic

transmission, this outstanding powertrain offers increased power and torque (272bhp at 6,200rpm and 342Nm at 4,700rpm) whilst reducing fuel consumption by some eight per cent over the previous RX 300.

Enhanced noise and vibration reduction measures result in even lower noise levels at all vehicle speeds. The new luxury SUV also features a new Mark Levinson Premium audio system, as well as a new, high-definition and fast response Lexus Navigation System.
Lexus supports life-saving air ambulance
A £20,000 donation from Lexus has enabled the Devon Air Ambulance Trust to purchase new life-saving equipment. The money is helping to pay for a new defibrillator along with other vital equipment, for the airborne medical service strengthening its capacity to deliver emergency help across the county.

The money has been sourced through Lexus's pioneering cooperative marketing programme, which combines set sums from the cost of each new Lexus model sold in the UK with contributions from Lexus centres around the country to create a central fund for good causes. The donation to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust is supported by the Lexus Exeter and Lexus Plymouth centres.

Devon's air ambulance service was founded in 1992 as a result of the Ceri Thomas Appeal and is an independent charitable trust, with no Government or National Lottery funding. It operates two helicopters, which provide rapid transport for paramedic teams, medical supplies and equipment and which can reach 50 per cent of Devon within five minutes, the remainder within 15.

Caroline Creer, Devon Air Ambulance Trust's Business Development Manager said: We are pleased to be working with Lexus to help build a better future for Devon's air ambulances. This fantastic donation will ensure the helicopter has the most up-to-date medical equipment on board, making a real difference to the community we serve.

In acknowledgement of Lexus's support, the helicopter crews have added Lexus patches to their flying suits.
Lexus redefines real-world luxury
Lexus has revealed the fourth generation of its LS flagship model, the all new LS 460 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Seventeen years on from the debut of the original LS, Lexus has crafted a luxury saloon that exemplifies its mission to deliver automotive perfection, at prices real-world motorists can afford.

Lexus engineers have achieved higher levels of accuracy, precision, refinement and craftsmanship than ever before, advancing further the superior qualities that have distinguished the LS in its class for the past 17 years.

NEW 4.6-LITRE V8 ENGINE

The LS 460 will be powered by an all-new 4.6-litre V8 engine, matched to the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission.

Provisional performance figures indicate an output of around 350bhp and more than 500Nm of torque, delivering nought to 60mph acceleration in less than 5.5 seconds. High performance will be matched by respectable fuel consumption, with economy in combined cycle driving expected to be in the mid-20s mpg range.

EXCELLENT DRIVING DYNAMICS

Ride and handling quality are supported by a new platform and redesigned multi-link suspension, with Electronic Power Steering and next-generation Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM).

VDIM is a Lexus-designed advanced stability system, first introduced in the new GS range in 2005. It integrates and manages the LS's suite of steering, handling and braking systems, including the EPS, ABS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist System (BAS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), together with engine torque, via the electronic throttle.

By means of a series of sensors, the system will anticipate the onset of a skid or slide and apply the appropriate braking, throttle and steering controls to correct the problem with a smoothness and efficiency that makes the operation almost imperceptible to the driver. VDIM is less obtrusive and more effective than in earlier designs as it gathers data from more sources and can process the information faster.

FIRST LONG WHEELBASE LS

The new LS is to be built in standard and, for the first time, long wheelbase body styles.

The LS 460L measures 5,151mm long, 122mm more than the regular LS 460. Rather than accommodating three passengers in the back, the LS 460L has two individual rear seats and a travelling environment designed to match the kind of luxury to be found in a private jet.

REDEFINING LUXURY MOTORING

The new Lexus LS displays intelligent technology and elegant, distinctive design throughout its interior. Luxury and comfort details include a heated steering wheel and seats upholstered in four shades of semi-aniline leather, matched to three coordinating wood grain trims.

The rear seats are electrically reclining with power operated leg rests and massage function. Working while on the move is made easier with a fold-out table in the rear, finished in matching wood grain. And to ensure the ideal cabin temperature is maintained, the new climate control system includes body heat sensors.

The in-car entertainment package features a nine-inch rear monitor mounted in the headlining and a bespoke 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio system that provides surround-sound reproduction. Rear doors have power closing and the boot lid has an automatic open and close function.

LEXUS L-FINESSE DESIGN

The LS 460 follows the principles of L-finesse, a new design language that is shaping the latest generation of Lexus production models, as already witnessed in the GS and IS series.

The essential quality of L-finesse is the elegant and appealing balance between simplicity and elegance, reflected in the LS's clean, uncluttered design. The car is distinctively a new generation Lexus, sharing selected styling cues and details with its sister GS and IS models.

THE UK MARKET

The new Lexus LS 460 is due to go on sale in the UK in the autumn. Full details of specification, performance and pricing will be announced nearer the on sale date.
Lexus is America's top-selling luxury brand for 6th year
With record-breaking sales in 2005, Lexus has retained its title as America's top-selling luxury brand for the sixth consecutive year. The luxury brand reported total year-end sales of 302,895 units, up 5.5 per cent over last year's record-breaking sales.

The introduction to the range of the Lexus RX 400h, the world's first luxury hybrid, helped boost sales with 20,674 units sold in 2005. The new Lexus GS range also had its best ever sales year with 33,457 units sold.

The Lexus sales total, along with the Toyota and Scion brands, was part of a record year for Toyota in America. Total sales reached 2.26 million vehicles, up 10.1 per cent over 2004. With ten consecutive years of record-breaking sales, this marks the second time in the company's 48-year history in America that it has reached sales of over two million vehicles.
Lexus SC 430 model year refinements
Lexus's ultra-sophisticated SC 430 might never be considered lacking when it comes to style and equipment, but the svelte coupe-convertible benefits from a strategic series of revisions and enhancements brought in for the 2006 model year.

The SC 430 is newly-equipped with an electronically controlled, six-speed automatic transmission, with optional override for manual sequential gear range selection for those seeking a more involving driving experience. The same unit as used in the Lexus LS and GS models, it adapts the shift pattern to suit individual driving style and road conditions.

The precision and efficiency of the new gearbox delivers more rapid acceleration, while at the same time achieving lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. In combined cycle driving the SC 430 returns 24.8mpg, compared to 23.5 with the previous five-speed system, while CO2 ratings are reduced by 18g/km to 269g/km. Nought to 62mph is two tenths of a second swifter at 6.2 seconds.

Night-time driving is made safer with the adoption of Lexus's Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which adjusts the headlamp beam in line with vehicle speed and steering angle, to provide better forward illumination through bends.

At the front the 2006 model can be identified by a new-look front grille, bumper, headlamps and indicators. The front fog lights have also been modified and at the rear, fast reacting LED lighting has been introduced.

A new design for the 18-inch alloy wheels and the introduction of Cadoxton Slate (dark grey) and Corinthian Bronze metallic paint finishes add further style and customer choice.

The Lexus SC 430, powered by a supremely smooth 282bhp 4.3-litre V8 engine, is priced on-the-road at £54,690.
Lexus IS - Head & heart?
With its distinctive dynamic styling, unmatched quality and exceptional driving performance. But most motorists have to take budget issues into consideration, too, and balance factors such as appearance and performance against the longer term impact of ownership on their finances.

True to Lexus's unmatched attention to detail, the IS makes substantial advances in cost of ownership benefits, setting class-leading standards and making the new car an even stronger proposition than the previous generation model.

Lexus has achieved all-round improvements in efficiency in the standard programme of servicing and maintenance for the IS's first 60,000 miles or three years. Compared to the previous generation model the contract servicing costs have been reduced by £288 (for models running on 17-inch tyres), while the cumulative length of time required to do the work has fallen by more than three hours to 5.1 hours.

This has been achieved through a series of measures, including the adoption of longer-life or maintenance-free components. These include:

  • Maintenance-free valve clearances
  • Transmission oil that does not require changing during the vehicle's lifetime
  • Air filter life extended from 30,000 to 40,000 miles
  • Engine coolant life extended from 30,000 to 100,000 miles
  • Brake pad replacement scheduled at 30,000 for front and 40,000 for rear
  • Engine uses mineral grade oil rather than expensive synthetic type

Another important area in which the new Lexus IS excels compared to its principal rivals is in the cost of replacement parts. In the event of a typical front or rear collision, the repair parts costs for the Lexus work out substantially cheaper.

For example, the combined cost of front-end elements, including bonnet, grille, bumper cover, wing, headlamp, radiator, front panel and air conditioning condenser, for the Audi A4 is almost 26 per cent greater than for the Lexus, while the Mercedes C-Class, Jaguar X-Type and BMW 3 Series range between 18 and 24 per cent more expensive. And it's a similar story where the cost of rear-end components are concerned, too.

Should crash repairs be necessary, the job of replacement has been made simpler, for example by introducing a bolt-on rather than welded front section. And the vehicle's radiator and air conditioning condenser have been positioned so that they do not have to be removed for the repair to be effected, so coolant and refrigerant gas do not have to be replaced.

These measures have had a positive impact on both the new IS's UK insurance ratings and early industry predictions for residual values.

In insurance terms, the new IS is launched with class-leading ratings, improving the levels attained by most of its principal rivals by one or two groups. The IS 250 has a 13E classification and the SE, SE-L and Sport (arriving in 2006) are in Group 14E. The diesel-powered IS 220d, to be launched in January next year, has been given a 12E rating, with SE, SE-L and sport versions in Group 13E.

These compare, for example, to Group 15E and 12E for the equivalent petrol and diesel powered Audi A4; 15E and 14E for the Jaguar X-TYPE and BMW 3 Series; and 16A and 13A for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Furthermore, the all-round strengths and appeal of the new IS are set to make it a wise buy in terms of its retained value. CAP Monitor has calculated a residual value of 47 per cent for the IS 250 and 45 per cent for the IS 250 SE, figures two per cent higher in each case than the equivalent BMW 3 Series model.
Lexus with world's first dual-chamber airbag
Technology, engineering and design have been constantly refined since then to deliver ever more efficient and effective operation, with the new Lexus IS 250 making the latest major advance in occupant protection with the world's first dual-chamber passenger airbag.

Unlike conventional airbags, which inflate in a single unit, the new dual-chamber version has twin vertical sections, creating a central depression that effectively cradles the face while dispersing the physical impact of the inflated bag across other parts of the head, shoulders and upper body.

The airbag is based on the Lexus Omni-Support concept and presents less risk of injury to the front seat passenger, without compromising the level of protection against primary impact forces.

Not only are all versions of the new Lexus IS 250 equipped with the dual-chamber passenger airbag, they are also the first premium D segment models to feature driver and front passenger knee airbags. Further protection is provided by seat-mounted Thorax-Abdomen-Pelvis (TAP) side airbags, with greater capacity to provide wider protection across the body.

Together with curtain shield airbags which run the length of each side of the vehicle cabin to protect both front and outer rear seat occupants, the IS carries a complement of eight airbags as standard on all models.

The Lexus IS 250 goes on sale in the UK on 19 November, priced from £22,400 on the road.
Rich mix for new Lexus IS
While other car brands are ending the year having to discount to win sales, Lexus is enjoying a strong demand for the high end derivatives of the soon to be launched IS 250.

Over a third (35 per cent) of the 1,300 advance orders for the all new car have been placed on the fully-loaded SE-L (£28,000) and 46 per cent are for the SE grade (£25,400).

The new IS is a typical Lexus with a standard specification that is very high so there is little on the option list, however that has not stopped nearly half of the early buyers (45 per cent) ordering the £2,710 Multimedia Pack. This comprises the Mark Levinson premium audio system with 14 speakers and 5.1 digital surround sound, a new satellite navigation system, a six-DVD changer, a seven-inch VGA screen, Bluetooth connectivity, voice activation and Rear Park Assist Monitor (rear view camera).

Deliveries of the new IS 250 start from 19 November with the much anticipated IS 220d diesel model coming in January.
Sh....it's (not quite) a secret Lexus
We can't tell you much about the next-generation Lexus LS, a model that's expected to rewrite the rulebook on luxury motoring towards the end of next year.

But keeping secrets is not considered a worthwhile virtue in the motor industry, so here are some useful clues to be going on with.

The Lexus LF-Sh concept provides strong pointers for the styling and dimensions of the next-generation Lexus flagship LS model. Its powerful and elegant lines are a further development of Lexus's L-finesse design language, as already witnessed in this year's new GS and IS models.

Presenting the car, Lexus Development Centre Manager Takeshi Yoshida said: The LF-Sh is conceived as the Lexus brand's flagship saloon of the future and represents Lexus's 'pursuit of perfection'. It is an impressive and elegant vehicle that delivers high standards of ride quality, comfort, safety and environmental performance.

Demonstrating Lexus's advances in advanced drivetrain technology, the LF-Sh is powered by a hybrid system combining electric motors and V8 petrol engine, driving all four wheels. This system offers exceptional acceleration, while delivering much lower emissions levels than conventional engines with similar outputs.

The concept vehicle also incorporates ground-breaking systems designed to increase accident avoidance performance.

Lexus anticipates a new LS model being ready for launch by the end of 2006. You may draw your own, informed conclusions, but we couldn't possibly comment....
